Comme des Garçons and MAC Collaborated on a Brilliant Tattoo-Inspired Collection

I’ve always thought of MAC as the ultimate cosmetics brand, for no other reason besides the fact that it’s my mom’s go-to for makeup: She’s been carrying their lipstick everywhere she goes, without fail, for as long as I can remember. And like my mom, celebrities have flocked to the makeup brand too, with Rihanna, Lorde, and Hello Kitty all designing limited-edition drops. But the newest partnership, a collaboration between Comme des Garçons and MAC, has piqued our interest with its tattoo-inspired kit.

The new limited-edition capsule, which features a handful of MAC’s iconic products such as their Brushstroke 24-Hour Liner in Brushblack and Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Definedly Black, is supposed to resemble the aesthetic of faded tattoos. Together, they can be used together to create customized temporary designs (not unlike our own Freehand Ink).

As the brain child of Comme des Garçons founder and creative director, Rei Kawakubo who, according to a statement published on the Dover Street Parfums Market website, has had a “long-time fascination with tattooing,” it’s designed to “celebrate raw, unadulterated creativity…{and pay} homage to the transformative power of tattoos through the brands’ own art-first approaches to beauty and fashion.”

The collaboration also includes three exclusive pieces of Comme des Garçons apparel, translucent shirts covered in tattoo-inspired art that provide the illusion of the body being covered in ink. Check out the different designs below.

There’s one catch: the limited drop is only available for a few more days at one store in Paris. (Ugh, I know.) You can get the temporary tattoo kit and the shirts until October 13, exclusively at the Dover Street Parfums Market. But if you don’t find yourself in France before Sunday, you’re not completely out of luck. All products in the kit can be purchased separately on the MAC website and in MAC stores, minus the super-cool Comme des Garçons branding.

Here’s the good news, though. If current trends are anything to go by, tattoo-inspired collections like this will start popping up more frequently. Tattoos are quickly becoming culturally ubiquitous, with permanent and temporary ink on the rise, and I can’t help but have the feeling this is just the start of a new era of tattoos being welcomed in the beauty and fashion worlds.
