The astrologically inclined will know that today, February 18, marks the beginning of Pisces season—a month dedicated to the solar returns of one of the most intuitive and imaginative zodiac signs. According to astrology OG Susan Miller, few signs can rival the emotional intensity, creativity, imagination, compassion, and selflessness of a Pisces. So basically, they’re a sign that any reasonable person should want in their lives. Despite the fact that this Pisces season starts off on a bit of a rough note with the onset of 2020’s first Mercury retrograde, it’s still a time worth celebrating. And if you’re looking for an especially creative way of celebrating (which you definitely are if you’re a Pisces), tattoos can be a great option. Here are nine Pisces tattoo designs that this wonderful water sign is sure to love.
1. This cute constellation
If you’re looking for a simple—but still super cute—way to pay homage to your zodiac sign, getting a tattoo of its corresponding constellation is always a great option. Here, Siyeon—a South Korean tattoo artist who actually specializes in botanical designs—took a step back from her usual florals pieces to tattoo this tiny, colorful take on the Pisces constellation.
2. These fineline fish
Each of the zodiac signs is symbolized by some sort of celestial spirit animal. For Pisces, that animal is the fish—two fish, in fact, that are typically pictured swimming in opposite directions, as seen in this fine line bicep tattoo by Julia, a London-based apprentice at Vibrant Ink studio. The duality of the fish is, according to Allure, said to represent “the constant division of Pisces’ attention between fantasy and reality.”
3. This wicked wave
Pisces is one of astrology’s three water signs, but its connection to the sea is particularly strong thanks to its ruling planet: Neptune. Like the mythological Roman god of the same name, Neptune is the planetary ruler of the sea. It makes sense then, that a sea-inspired tattoo design is a good fit for any Pisces looking to embrace their relationship with the water. This piece, which makes use of colorful dotwork detailing, was done by Evgeny Mel, resident artist and owner of Visota Tattoo in Moscow.
4. A subtle symbol
This forearm tattoo by Austrian artist, Ogígia, is a simple rendition of the glyph that represents Pisces. The single needle tattoo is the kind of piece that only someone with astrological know-how would be able to recognize, making it one of the more subtle and mysterious Pisces tattoo designs on this list.
5. This colorful cloud
Although this pastel-colored cloud doesn’t necessarily seem like a Pisces tattoo at first glance, it’s a design that could be deeply symbolic to the sign. Pisces is ruled by Neptune which, per Susan Miller, is the planet that “holds sway over dreams, the subconscious, illusions, fantasies, and all things magical and enchanting.” It’s thanks to Neptune that Pisces are so creative and imaginative. That imagination often leaves them daydreaming, so much so that you could say a Pisces regularly seems to have their ‘head stuck in the clouds.’
6. This mesmerizing moon
Every zodiac is associated with a specific tarot card. Pisces’ is The Moon. The Moon card represents intuition, making it a perfect match for the highly intuitive water sign. Here, Uls Metzger, resident artist at Biesy Tattoo Studio in Kraków, tattooed the card in his signature illustrative, black and grey style with impressively clean lines (straight lines are extremely difficult to tattoo, FYI).
7. These eye-catching creatures
Amalthea, the Melbourne-based artist behind this Pisces tattoo, is a master of watercolor style. In this particular piece they’ve combined styles, though—the design includes elements of both watercolor and fine linework which, put when together, create an incredibly unique composition. Plus, notice the dates tattooed around the design? They’re all late-February to mid-March birthdays, which makes it seem like this piece doubles as a memorial tattoo that pays homage to Pisces loved ones. How sweet!
8. Doubly dreamy daffodils
If you’re a March-born Pisces looking to get a piece that isn’t overtly astrological, another great tattoo option is your birth flower: the daffodil. This mirrored set of blackwork florals was perfectly placed along the client’s clavicle by Jordan Busbea, a tattooer of 10 years based in San Diego.
9. This water-filled women
As a water sign that’s symbolized by fish and ruled by Neptune, Pisces are born comfortable in the sea. While this tattoo wasn’t specifically created to represent the sign, it certainly seems to be symbolic of being one with the water, making it a great design inspiration for any Pisces. The Neo Traditional style piece was done by Roha, a resident artist at Lighthouse Tattoo Studio in Busan whose portfolio is filled with similar pieces (you can see them on her Instagram, here).
